ALLAH GRANTS THAT THEY NEVER SET FOOT THERE AGAIN

THE BATTLES FOUGHT BY ABU BAKR

Volume XI of the History of Al-Tabari reports in great detail the events unfolding during the Caliphate of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq and his successor. In fact, the period taken into consideration goes from 633 to 635 CE; following the Muslim calendar, the years are from 12 to 13 AH.

The events taking place in this period are thus covered in great detail, more than in other books of Al-Tabari and the reason is simple. In fact, it is in this brief period that the Caliphate truly becomes an Empire, going well beyond the borders of the Arabic Peninsula.

Of particular importance, then, are two battles, the one fought in Al-Madhar and the one which took place in Al-Walajah.

THE CHARACTER OF ABU BAKR AND MUSLIMS DURING WARS

In the previous post, we saw the intent of the Caliph to come to terms with the traitors who rebelled against his rule. Now, we want to see another aspect, not very known, of his character; in fact, he dictated the rules to be followed during armed conflicts. Note that we are in 632 CE, and that he ordered his armies the following:

Neither kill a child, nor a woman, nor an aged man. Bring no harm to the trees, nor burn them with fire, especially those which are fruitful. Slay not any of the enemy’s flock, save for your food.

We can see the difference with the rules followed by the crusaders, some centuries later; on this regard, we can consider the massacre perpetrated by the crusaders, when they entered the city of Ma’arra, on the 11 of December, 1098. The ferocity of the attack is witnessed by the accounts of the event, which tells us that the crusaders

For three days they put people to sword,

Killing more than a hundred thousand people

And taking many captives

(Maalouf, 2012, p. 39)

Well, it is quite a big difference, and a different story emerges; in fact, in the West they told us very little of Islam and especially of his beginning. The little we know, the little I knew before becoming Muslim, was that the Crusades were a legitimate warfare. From the sources, however, a different picture is emerging, and the myth of the ‘good Christian’ has no more place.

However, the image of the ‘bad Muslim’ persists still today; Muslims has been attacked, their territory invaded by foreigners, yet, they are the warmongers. There are so many accounts of the violence of the Christian crusaders, on one side, and on the fairness of Muslims, on the other, that I could write a library, not a book.

A LESSON TO LEARN FOR TODAY

The level of the violence of the crusaders was so high, that, after defeating them, and after expelling Christians from Palestine, in 1291, a Muslim chronicler noted

Allah grants that they never set foot here again!

Unfortunately, he was wrong, as we know very well; the descendants of the crusaders are doing the same things now. History repeats itself, and they will be expelled again insha Allah!

I can’t wait to repeat with the Muslim historian

Allah grants that they never set foot there again!

Unfortunately, the Muslims are divided along national and doctrinal lines; the Muslims succeeded in the past because they were politically united. Today, it seems that the plan of the colonizers, divide et impera, is working, but the situation can change insha Allah!
